Sometimes ongoing or weekly sessions aren’t a fit. You might consider an intensive if:

You have demanding schedules.

If you're both high-level professionals, entrepreneurs, or parents with complex logistics, finding a consistent weekly time slot can be nearly impossible. Coordinating childcare, travel schedules, or back-to-back work commitments makes weekly therapy impractical. An intensive lets you block off dedicated time once (or over a few days) rather than trying to maintain weekly consistency for months.

You want to make an important decision together.

Should you have kids? Move across the country for a job? Open your relationship? An intensive gives you focused time to work through big life questions as a team.

You want to jumpstart longer-term work.

An intensive can be a powerful way to begin therapy by getting deep quickly so you can then maintain progress with recurring sessions.

You want a tune-up.

Maybe you’ve had successful couples therapy in the past. An intensive can be a great way to refocus on your relationship, remind you of your values and sharpen the skills you once had.

You're facing a major transition.

Moving, career changes, having a baby, blending families–big life shifts can strain even the strongest relationships. An intensive helps you navigate the transition as a team.

You're at an impasse.

Maybe there's been a new discovery, identity shift, or an infidelity. An intensive gives you concentrated time to work through the immediate issue and figure out if and how to move forward.

What to Expect in an Online Couples Intensive

Before the intensive: We'll have an initial consultation to understand your relationship, what's brought you to this point, and what you're hoping to accomplish. We may send you assessments or questions to complete beforehand so we can hit the ground running. We'll discuss which format of intensive would match your needs best. We usually start with a three hour workshop. Some folks get a lot out of that and are ready to move forward while others find they want to continue working together either through more regular sessions or another intensive session.

During the intensive you can expect:

  • A thorough assessment of your relationship dynamics, strengths, and challenges

  • Guided exercises tailored specifically to what your relationship

  • Real-time practice of new communication skills

  • Creating concrete plans and agreements for moving forward

After the intensive: You'll leave with new insights, tools, and a plan for how to move forward. Some couples transition to on-going follow-up sessions. Others feel equipped to continue on their own. We'll help you figure out what makes sense for you.

FAQs

  • We provide all of our services exclusively online through a secure therapy platform. This means you can access our specialized couples and relationship therapy from anywhere in California, whether you're in San Francisco, across the Bay Area, or elsewhere in the state.

Online therapy offers flexibility, convenience, and the comfort of participating from your own space, while still providing the same high-quality care as in-person sessions.

  • 3 hours in length at a fee of $725.

  • The immersive nature of the work requires being able to focus entirely on your relationship without other obligations pulling your attention. We definitely recommend that you leave space for downtime with your partner afterwards.

  • There's something uniquely powerful about concentrated, uninterrupted time. You build momentum, deepen your understanding, and leave with strategies and goals to strengthen your connection.

  • Absolutely. Some couples find that starting with an intensive helps them get comfortable with therapy and builds momentum for ongoing work.

  • We're there to guide you through difficult moments. Part of our role is helping you navigate intense emotions and conflicts in real time, which is an important part of the therapeutic process.

  • That's okay. An intensive can help you gain clarity on that decision and, if separation is the path forward, we can help you do it in a healthy, respectful way.

  • We can’t guarantee that any therapy will work for any one person as everyone and every relationship is unique.

What we can say is that intensives work best when both partners are genuinely willing to engage in the process. If one person is completely checked out or unwilling to participate, an intensive may not be the right fit.

We'll make sure to discuss in the consultation what format might be best for your unique situation.
